Thousands of migrants from Honduras and Nicaragua who are legally living in the United States must make an important decision before July 5, 2025. That day is the final deadline to renew their TPS (Temporary Protected Status) and remain protected under this program. If they do not complete the process on time, they could lose their work permit and face the risk of deportation.

TPS (Temporary Protected Status) is a U.S. government program that allows people from certain countries to live and work legally in the country when their countries of origin face serious situations such as wars, natural disasters, or humanitarian crises.
In this case, the beneficiaries are citizens of Honduras and Nicaragua who already have this status and were first protected in the 1990s.
¿Until when will TPS be in effect for Honduras and Nicaragua?
According to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), TPS for these countries is in effect until July 5, 2025. This 18-month extension was announced in June 2023 by the Joe Biden administration.
Important: Only individuals who were previously registered and approved for TPS can re-register. New applicants are not accepted.
If you are Honduran or Nicaraguan and already have TPS, you must re-register between November 6, 2023, and July 5, 2025, to maintain your legal status and your work permit.
Steps you must follow:
Complete Form I-821 (Application for Temporary Protected Status).
If you want to renew your work permit, also include Form I-765 (Application for Employment Authorization).
Submit the forms online or by mail to the corresponding address.

To keep TPS active for Honduras or Nicaragua, migrants must meet the following conditions:
Be a citizen of Honduras or Nicaragua (or have habitually resided there).
Have lived in the U.S. since December 30, 1998.
Have been physically present in the U.S. since January 5, 1999.
Have no serious criminal record or multiple misdemeanor convictions.
Important: If you do not submit your application before July 5, 2025, the government may cancel your TPS, which means:
You will no longer be able to work legally.
You may receive a deportation order.
You will lose protection from being removed from the country.
Remember: TPS does not provide a direct path to permanent residency or citizenship. It only protects you temporarily while your country of origin is in crisis.
However, if you meet other requirements, you may apply for:
Asylum.
A Green Card through family, marriage, employment, or other legal categories.
Always consult with an immigration attorney if you wish to explore these options.
